If you have recently sold a vehicle with a current tag or plate, you may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of registration and property tax. Refunds will be given starting the next full month after the tag or plate and all documents are submitted.

What you need:

  • Current tag or plate along with the corresponding decals. If the plate has been lost or stolen, you must obtain a police report.
  • Original current year Kansas registration receipt.
  • Social Security Numbers for all owners listed.
  • Signatures for all owners listed.

If you prefer to apply for a refund by mail, you will need to complete a sold vehicle refund form and include the above information.

Refunds may take up to 30 days to complete.

If you have moved out of Kansas and have registered your vehicle in another state, you may be eligible for a refund of the unused portion of property tax.

What you need:

  • Current tag or plate along with the corresponding decals. If the plate has been lost or stolen, you must obtain a police report.
  • Original current year Kansas registration receipt.
  • A completed Former Kansas Resident Refund Form for all owners listed.
  • Social Security Numbers for all owners listed.
  • Copy of driver’s license and vehicle registration in new state per K.S.A. 79-5107(d).
