General Questions

There are currently two office locations for Johnson County residents to process their vehicle registrations/titling. There is one at Mission and at Olathe.

Both DMV locations offer a new line queuing system that offers customers more intuitive options to waiting in line by providing line status updates through cell phone text messages. First, customers will need to go to one of our two locations in Mission or in Olathe. Then, they can use the touch screen kiosks available at the front of each location and follow the steps below.

  • Choose your language, English or Spanish
  • Select the service you require; Vehicle Tag Renewal or Titling a Vehicle
  • If the wait time < 20 minutes, you will receive a paper ticket instructing you to wait for your number to be called
  • If the wait time > 20 minutes, you will receive the option to enter your cell phone number. The last four digits of your phone number will become your ticket number
  • You can leave the DMV and monitor your cell phone for updates when your turn is approaching
  • You will receive a text message 15 minutes before you reach the front of the line
  • Make sure you read your text messages carefully
  • Reply (S) for Status updates/ (L) to Leave the line/ (H) for Help/ or (M) for More time
  • Reply (J) to rejoin the line if you have left the line. Keywords are "Mission DMV" or "Olathe DMV" depending on which location you wish to use
  • You will NOT need to check in or pull a new ticket when you return back at the DMV

When titling and registering, you may pay a registration fee and sales tax on a new or used vehicle, along with personal property taxes.

You may pay your tag registration using cash, check (with valid driver's license and daytime phone number), money order, cashier's check, or credit/debit card (Visa, MasterCard, or Discover). There will be a convenience fee charged by the payment processor for using a credit or debit card.

If you are registering more than one vehicle, you may combine to make one payment.

There will be a $30.00 service charge per each returned check.

To view the current credit/debit card and echeck convenience fees for all online or phone payments, please go to https://www.kswebtags.org/conveniencefees.aspx.

If you are paying in person by credit or debit card at either the Olathe or Mission location, the fee will be as follows:

Amounts between $.01 and $125.00 = $3.95 flat fee applies for all credit/debit card transactions.

Amounts $125.01 and over = 2.99% of total transaction.

When paying fees, the check can be made payable to Division of Motor Vehicles or DMV.

Fill out the Handicapped Placard Form (Adobe Reader Required) and follow its instructions. It can be faxed to (913)826-1810 or mailed to the DMV Office for processing.

You can mail the form to either the Mission or Olathe DMV Offices.

If a vehicle is purchased from a family member, a Relationship Affidavit needs to be completed. Depending on the relationship, this may allow sales tax not to be collected on the purchase price of the vehicle at the time of registration.

If a vehicle is gifted to an individual, the title needs to be assigned to the individual and the Vehicle Gift Certification section of the Affidavit To A Fact needs to be filled out.

Titles

Registration fees can cost between $39 and $49 per year (prorated to the number of months before you re-register the vehicle). Title fees are $10. The Highway Patrol VIN verification fee is $10 (needed if you are registering a used vehicle with an out of state title).

Sales tax, if applicable, is made up of state, county, and local tax rates. On average, this is around 8.15%.

Property tax can be estimated by going to the Property Tax Calculator and entering the owner's last name initial, year, make and model of your vehicle. This is also pro-rated.

Call us at (913)826-1800 with the plate number or VIN number and we can check the status for you.

Fill out the Duplicate Title Application (Adobe Reader Required) and follow its instructions. The cost is $10.00.

You can mail the form to either the Mission or Olathe DMV Offices.

Please allow up to 6 to 8 weeks for receipt of your new title from the State.

If this timeframe is unacceptable, you have the option of bringing your paperwork to either DMV office, getting all of the paperwork processed and paying an additional fee of $5.00 for the hand-carry benefit. To do this, all registration/title fees, applicable property tax/sales taxes need to be paid for in cash. The business day after you process the application at one of our offices (6000 Lamar Avenue, Mission or 1327A East Santa Fe Street, Olathe), you may drive to Topeka to obtain the title the next working day. The KDOR office is located at the Docking State Office Building - 1st Floor 915 SW Harrison Topeka, Ks 66612. KDOR business hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. except for State holidays. You can contact their office at (785)296-3621. For the hearing impaired, use (785)296-8924 (TTY machines).

Registration

A 30 day tag may be purchased by bringing the assigned title, bill of sale, and current insurance information to either Motor Vehicle location. The 30 day tag will be valid for the first 30 days from the date of purchase. The cost of the 30 day tag is $8.00 and is payable by cash only.

If your license plate is lost or stolen from your vehicle, you must file a police report in the city in which the loss occurred. Bring the police report, current registration, and current insurance information to either motor vehicle office to obtain a replacement plate. This must be done by the registered vehicle owner, or the registered owner may give someone Power of Attorney to process this transaction on their behalf. The cost of this transaction is $3.00, or $4.00 if a duplicate registration is needed.

Fill out the Manual Personalize Plate Application (Adobe Reader Required). The cost for personalized plates is $46.00 for an Auto/Light Truck, or $45.50 for Motorcycles. Anyone can order a personalized plate for a vehicle at either DMV location. You may have up to 7 letters or spaces for an Auto/Light Truck personalized plate and up to 5 letters or spaces for a Motorcycle personalized plate. There is no punctuation allowed on personalized plate lettering.

Personalized plates can only be picked up at the Mission location. You will receive a notification from the state when your personalized plate is shipped to our office. You will need to bring your current license plate issued to you, the current registration and insurance information. Only the registered owner(s) is/are permitted to pick up the personalized plate, unless another individual has Power of Attorney from the registered owner. Whoever is picking up the plate also has to have a picture ID (driver's license, passport, etc.) so we can verify their identity.

The State of Kansas offers a Personalized Plate Look-Up on their website, which allows users to search for available plate combinations. State law requires that there can be only one letter combination per personalized plate in the state of Kansas.

In Kansas, there are several unique license plate designs available to choose from. This list is available online here, Kansas Distinctive License Plates.

Renewals

The state mails courtesy renewal notices 45 days prior to your expiration date. You should receive your notice a few days later through the U.S. Mail.

The state generates courtesy reminders 45 days before the expiration date, but it is still the citizen's responsibility to renew in a timely manner. Lost or missing reminders occur on occasion. This occurs most often when you have recently moved and the reminder is sent to your previous address. If you intend on renewing in person, the renewal notice is not necessary, however you will need proof of insurance, any other applicable paperwork, and the license plate/tag number as well. Prior to calling our office at (913)826-1820 to request a duplicate notice (if you plan to renew by mail), have the license plate/tag number readily available to expedite the process. If you choose to mail in your renewal, be sure to include any change of address.

If you do not receive your decal in the mail within 10 days from mailing in your payment, contact our office at (913)826-1820 to inquire if the decal may have been returned to our office. If the decal has been returned, give the customer service representative the correct mailing address and the decal will be either sent out again or held in the office if you want to pick it up in person.

If the decal has not been returned, a police report must be filed in the city in which you reside. After filing the police report, bring the report, license plate number of the vehicle, insurance information and $0.50 to either motor vehicle office to obtain a replacement decal. This must be done by the registered owner of the vehicle, or the registered owner may give someone Power of Attorney to process this transaction on their behalf.
